Best Water Purifier in India – Buying Guide and Tips

You must have access to safe drinking water to stay healthy. At present, India has alarming levels of water pollution due to it being a developing country. Hence, a water purifier is necessary for every Indian household.

There are plenty of models available in the Indian market for that reason. Everyone claims their product to be the best. Now the question is, which one is right for you? To answer that question, you need to consider a few essential factors, which we’ll be discussing in this buying guide section. Let’s get started.

Types of Water Purifiers Based on Filtration Technology

There are mainly three types of water purifiers based on filtration technology. These are RO (Reverse Osmosis), UV (Ultra-Violet) and UF (Ultra-filtration) water purifiers. Below, we will give you an idea of how each of these technologies works and their benefits.

1. RO (Reverse Osmosis) Water Purifier

RO (Reverse Osmosis) Water Purifier

Presently, RO (Reverse Osmosis) is the most advanced and effective water purification technology. It can efficiently remove harmful contaminants such as chemicals, bacteria, and viruses from your drinking water.

This kind of purification technology works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane. The pores of this membrane are very small. As a result, only water molecules can pass through it, and all the other contaminants are rejected.

RO is the only technology capable of removing harmful dissolved solids such as pesticides, arsenic, lead, mercury etc., from water.

Advantages of RO Water Purifier

  • RO water purifier removes toxic dissolved chemicals such as pesticides, arsenic, lead, mercury and heavy metals.
  • They can disinfect water by removing bacteria and viruses.
  • Ideal for purifying hard water.
  • Models are more compact.

Disadvantages of RO Water Purifier

  • It produces wastewater that can only be recycled for specific purposes.
  • Costly as compared to other water purifiers.
  • They need electricity to work.

2. UV (Ultraviolet) Water Purifier

UV (Ultraviolet) Water Purifier

UV (Ultraviolet) purification is an effective method that kills germs in the water through ultraviolet radiation. In this case, an ultraviolet bulb is used that produces ultraviolet rays. And when passing through this ray, almost all the bacteria and viruses present in the water die. This process can destroy up to 99.99% of the pathogens present in the water.

Advantages of UV Water Purifier

  • UV water purifier kills 99.99% of harmful bacteria and viruses.
  • It does not use any chemicals.
  • Low maintenance costs.
  • Less costly as compared to RO water purifiers.

Disadvantages of UV Water Purifier

  • Can not remove dissolved harmful substances like lead, arsenic, and fluoride from the water.
  • Not capable of purifying dirty or muddy water.
  • Need electricity to work.

3. UF (UltraFiltration) Water Purifier

UF (UltraFiltration) Water Purifier

UF (ultra-filtration) technology is an effective water purification method that can remove harmful microorganisms from water. It is also capable of purifying mud and dirty water.

Though this technology works similarly to RO, it’s not exactly the same. In UF, water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane. But in this case, the membrane pores are much larger than RO membranes. Due to this, harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses are rejected, while dissolved contaminants such as pesticides, lead, arsenic, and fluoride are allowed to pass through.

Advantages of UF Water Purifier

  • Can work without electricity.
  • It removes harmful germs from the water.
  • Capable of purifying mud and turbid water.
  • Less costly as compared to others.

Disadvantages of UF Water Purifier

  • Can not remove dissolved harmful solids like lead, arsenic, and fluoride from the water.

Here’s an article comparing RO vs UV vs UF water purifiers based on the most important factors.

Things to Consider Before Buying the Best Water Purifier In India

After you consider the type of water purifier you need, the next step is to consider the more specific aspects.

1. Water Quality At Home

One of the most critical factors you should consider is the water quality in your locality.

There are mainly two types of water: Soft water and Hard water. Soft Water has a low concentration of minerals; it’s the typical water found in most places. On the other hand, hard water is saturated with minerals like calcium and magnesium.

Follow the points below to understand the situation and pick the right purifier.

  • If you get hard water at your home, in other words, when the TDS value is above 500mg/little, then you should go for an RO water purifier.
  • When the water is soft, particularly when the TDS value is less than 500mg/little, you don’t need an RO water purifier. Because in that situation, a UV water purifier is sufficient to do the job efficiently.
  • But if the Water is highly infected and the TDS value is also high, you should consider a RO+UV water purifier.

2. TDS of Water

TDS refers to the total dissolved solids present in water.
These dissolved solids are basically inorganic salts and small amounts of organic compounds. They appear in the water, both for natural causes and for human activities such as urban development and farming. Generally, sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium are present in the water as natural minerals.

The presence of the right amount of TDS in drinking water is necessary. If it’s too low, the taste of the water becomes terrible. On the contrary, a high TDS value generally indicates the contamination of harmful substances like lead, arsenic, and fluoride in water.

Let’s understand the acceptable TDS values of drinking water from the points below.

TDS (mg/ltr)Rating
Less than 300Excellent
300 - 500Good - Acceptable for human consumption
500 - 900Not good - Should not be consumed.
900 - 1200Poor - Unfit for human consumption.
Above 1200Unacceptable

You can measure the TDS by yourself with a Digital TDS Meter. Check out this post of ours to know how to use such a meter.

We recommend getting an RO Water Purifier to properly handle TDS levels in water, as they come with a TDS Regulator. This allows you to set the optimum level of TDS in the purified water so that it’s just right for drinking.

3. Storage capacity

Storage capacity is also a crucial factor to consider. If you live in a city with frequent power cuts, a big storage capacity will come in handy; It’ll ensure a continuous purified water supply when the power goes out.

On top of that, the adequate capacity for you can also change significantly based on the size of your family. If the family has less than 4 members, you should get a 5-8 Litre purifier. If it has 4-6 members, then you should get one with a capacity of 8-10 Litres. However, if the number exceeds 6, you might likely need as much as 10 Litres’ worth of capacity.

4. Power Consumption

A UF water purifier doesn’t need electricity to work, but UV and RO purifiers do, as they have a more complicated and advanced purification process. Electricity bills don’t rise significantly, but if you’re in an area with frequent power cuts, you might be better off getting a purifier that isn’t dependent on electricity.

5. Maintenance Expenses

Water Purifier Maintenance

The maintenance cost differs across different water purifiers. Most water purifiers need servicing after every 4 to 6 months. While needing general maintenance, the filters also need changing after a period of time. Having both of these done can cost you as much as Rs 1500. Most of the best water purifiers will cost you under Rs 2000. Lower-end RO systems tend to cost much more, about Rs 2000 to Rs 4000.

6. Quality Assurance

Reading customer reviews and considering the purification technology is generally a good way to gauge the purifier’s quality. However, some high-quality water purifiers come with extra assurance. They have certifications from certain organisations that specialise in water purification or water safety. Such organisations include NSF and WQA.

7. Purification Level

water purifier mineral cartridge

Purifiers are the best way to gain access to safe drinking water. However, if you’re going for a water purifier with a specific budget, you must consider what level of purification you need. If you live in an area where water pollution isn’t prominent, you can easily go for a basic purifier. It’ll be enough to keep your water pure.

However, you’d need a more powerful water purifier, like an RO one, in an area with high water pollution levels. If you do get such a purifier, ensure that it doesn’t eliminate good minerals in the water alongside the impurities.

To avoid that, you can go for an RO water purifier with a mineral cartridge or TDS Controller. Either of these can add important minerals like Calcium and Magnesium back into the water after the filtration process is completed.

8. pH Levels

Water at certain pH levels can be harmful to your health. The ideal pH level of drinking water is between 6.5 and 8.5. Suppose the water you’re using for drinking has a pH level that falls outside of this range. In that case, you need to specifically opt for RO water purifiers, as their TDS Controller or Mineraliser can help fix the pH level.

9. Advanced Purification Technologies

Water Purifier Advanced Purification Technologies

Sometimes the water supply can have water with TDS levels of 900ppm. In such a case, you’d need a particularly powerful water purifier. There are RO+UV+UF purifiers, which use the filtration mechanisms of all three technologies to offer maximum water purification. They are a little more expensive and have more power consumption, but they make up for that by offering bigger health benefits.

10. Reusability

RO Waste Water Reuse

RO Water Purifiers produce wastewater when filtering the water in reserve. The wastewater that gets released isn’t drinkable, as it contains most of the impure substances. As the rejected water is saturated with these, it isn’t healthy to drink such water at all. You can still save the water and reuse it, though. RO Waste Water can be used to wash inorganic objects like cars and so on.

While we’re on the topic, feel free to check out our blog on how to save water; you might benefit from knowing if your area has issues with water supplies.

11. Extra Safety Features

Water Purifier Filter Change Alarm

Some purifiers come equipped with mechanisms that stop you from drinking water when the filters aren’t working properly.

For instance, some warn you before the filter reaches its expiration date. A few even cut off the water supply directly if the filter gets clogged beyond what can be considered somewhat healthy.

12. Design

Most purifiers have their own unique design. You can get whichever fits well into the look of your kitchen. Just make sure it won’t be too large for the space you want to install it. You don’t need to worry much about the purifier’s weight, as you won’t move it around often.

13. Warranty

Keeping your purifier running at peak performance is essential; otherwise, using it would be counterproductive to use one. You should get a purifier with a good warranty so you can get occasional maintenance done without paying extra.

That’s especially important with RO Purifiers; they often run into issues.

14. Brand

It would help if you considered the best water purifier brand that has an excellent reputation for producing quality water purifiers. Consider choosing a brand that is trusted for providing efficient water purifiers.

15. After-sales services
