Split AC vs Window AC

The first thought that comes to your mind when buying an air conditioner is whether to purchase a window AC or split AC.

From the name, you must have guessed that a split AC has two parts. One is an indoor unit and the other is an outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is placed outside of the room. The indoor unit is mounted inside the room, which is connected to the outer unit by electric wire and copper pipe.

A window AC, on the other hand, contains only one unit. The compressor, condenser, blower resides within a single compartment. The window AC is positioned in the window frame, where the blower side is facing toward the room. And the other side is hanging out of the room.

An air conditioner is a significant contributor to your overall electricity bill. Therefore, energy efficiency should be your priority before buying an AC.

In terms of energy efficiency, split AC is the better choice than window AC. It does not mean that window AC is not energy efficient at all. What matters is the EER (energy efficiency ratio).

ERR refers to the amount of cooling an air conditioner can provide by consuming 1 watt of electricity. Bureau of Energy Efficiency provides a star rating based on this EER. The higher the EER, the higher the star rating.

In most cases, the EER of the split AC is higher than the window AC. Therefore, split AC is more energy-efficient than window AC. And that’s why we see a much higher number of 5-star models of split AC in the market.

A split AC is technically much more advanced than a window AC. In terms of performance, a Split AC is much powerful as compared to a window AC.

Due to its technological advancements, a Split AC can provide you with many advanced, convenient control options.

Also, in the case of split AC, the compressor and condenser are out of the room, so the noise is very low.

Firstly, the demand for Split AC is high in the market, and secondly, there is little opportunity for technological advancement in the window AC. Because of this, currently, almost all companies are focusing more on Split AC.

Focus on the star rating

Star rating is crucial when buying an air conditioner. The star rating shows how energy efficient an AC is. The BEE, Government of India, provides star rating to a product depending on several factors.

Star ratings range from one to five, the higher the star rating of an AC, the more energy-efficient it will be. In other words, 5-star indicates maximum energy efficiency.

But it should also be remembered that the price of 5-star AC is high. Now the question is how reasonable is it to buy a 5 star AC with a higher price? This question is difficult to answer in one word. Different people have different needs.

If you think your AC will run at least eight hours a day for upto six months a year, then we would advise you to buy a 5-Star AC. Because, of course, you initially need to spend a little more money for a 5-star AC. But you can save a lot of electricity in the long run.

On the other hand, if you think your AC will run less than 8 hours a day on average, then a 3-star AC would be appropriate for you. Because, in that case, paying a high price for 5-star AC is not justified.

We talked about Split AC vs Window AC so far. We found that Split AC comes with more advanced technology. A Split AC provides you with various convenient control options. Most importantly, it can save a lot of electricity.

But split AC costs a little more than the window AC. We would advise you to buy a Split AC if the budget is not an issue.

We believe that at this stage, we have been able to answer all your common questions. If you have any specific questions, please let us know in the comment section below. We will try to respond as quickly as possible.
